Error opening ‘/media/iPod/iPod_Control/Music’ for writing (Read-only file system)

by macewan on December 30, 2007

I stand corrected. It’s much easier to work with the iPod on Ubuntu Linux if you are working with a Windows format instead of Apple format with that little green brick. I’m currently too busy with a project to explain how to fix this little problem so I’m issuing a raincheck. Don’t worry about the if because this is doable. Google around for hfsplus if you feel brave.

From the error messages I’ve encounted it appears that we’ll be reinstalling the filesystem on the iPod and working from there. I may even install ipodlinux if the mood stikes me. In the even you’ve run into these problems and have a suggestion please feel free to pass it along. As long as you’re not spamming I’ll approve the comment.

Google does NewYorkTimes

by macewan on November 5, 2007

So it begins! Google Enters the Wireless World says the New York Times.

“We are not building a GPhone; we are enabling 1,000 people to build a GPhone,” said Andy Rubin, Google’s director of mobile platforms, who led the effort to develop the software.

While I’m discussing the benefits of steel structures — Google drops the post Danger bomb with news of the

Mr. Rubin demonstrated a hand-held touch-screen device that gave an immersive view of Google Earth…

All I ask when testing these devices is that you check out DeadMule.com to see that we are all ready and waiting for mobile revolution! Well, for the last 10 (ten TEN) years we’ve been ready. The Dead Mule has always been coded with multi-platform viewing in mind. When it comes to Southern Fiction the future need of platform independent viewing has always been met by the Mule.

Does anyone else remember General Magic? Talk about being ahead of the game.  Mr. Rubin finally has his day as Google named the software Android - I’m guessing after the company snacked up in 2005. By the way Andriod appears to be Linux-based with bits of Java in the mix. So the system can be programmed if you know the workings of Linux and you can program in Java. Hehehehehe. Sweeet.

Microsoft’s attempt at the desktop

by macewan on September 15, 2007

Is Windows ready for the desktop? As you have probably heard by now Microsoft is marketing an operating system which they claim is as useful as Linux for day to day use.

Now, I am not going to lie to you and claim to have spent much time with this Microsoft Windows desktop platform. With what I’ve seen from news reports, their environment as a whole is unstable in our networked world. First of all — they actually charge for an operating system without basic software bundles - those are extra.

This isn’t fiction — hear me out. Unlike Ubuntu Linux — which is shipped free of any charges with a complete productivity suite, photo editing software, ftp software, DMR free music software, a safe modern browser, integrated email and calendaring software — this Microsoft corporation will firstly charge for the OS and only include an out-dated browser.

Unlike Windows, your typical Linux is available to install on pretty much any hardware on which you have access. Everything from a wrist watch to PC or Mac desktops — all the way to the Rover on the planet Mars. When you purchase Windows, you need to have a fairly powerful hardware system with lots of RAM.

So, do we think this Windows operating system from Microsoft will succeed? Perhaps in time but only because of the brute force marketing of this cash rich corporation. I’m told they have been trying since the mid ’80s copying & stealing from other companies. Only time will tell.
