Website traffic update for macewan.org

by macewan on February 12, 2008

Hey there I'm Robert MacEwan the author of Ideal Absolutes. If you're new to macewan.org, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed.

Yes, I’m staring at the clock ticking down to 12am. This is way past my usual bedtime, but I just got an unusual offer. One that really can’t be ignored. OK, back to the macewan.org traffic update. Below you’ll find a graphic demonstating the upward trend over the last month or so. And while I do not rely on this site to generate my online income it’s contribution is certainly welcomed none the less. Keep in mind there isn’t an advertising campaign running that’s responsible for this good fortune. So we’ll have to place blame on the likes of the star shaped brownie stairing at me. The one sitting on the growing list, currently over 85, of sites I’m managing at the time.

macewan.org website traffic graphic for Feb. 12, 2008

So bare with me through the next few days as I unfold several additions to the family of online properties joining macewan media. From colorful insights into Microsoft secret thoughts, FTC Chairwoman odd celebration, Google’s unfair attack on Izea members to Ubuntu Linux tutorials and videos (plug Ubuntube.net). Seriously, check out these videos on UbunTube. Microsoft’s Vista user interafce would best be discribed as pathetic in comparison. We’ve seen not only their one window trick at a fraction of the hardware requirements you find the other worldly app interaction seen by Sun’s Java Looking Glass - oh yeah, minus the resource intense Java. Be sure to check out BlogsPageRank.com for a no nonsense Page Rank update on your site.

Fourteen thousand advertisers to ignore Google’s Page Rank?

by macewan on January 25, 2008

This will obviously cause quite a stir in the blogging world. Reading through the Izea townhall meeting transcript a few statements stuck in my mind as encouraging for everyone involved. First, Izea is a fast moving target not easily thrown off course by Google’s attempt at censoring bloggers through PR (pagerank) deletion (Google Smacking). Second, I got the impression Izea does listen to feedback from both the Posties and the advertisers. Speaking of advertisers there are now over fourteen thousand using the Izea platform. WOW.

Now for the good news. But before I go there I wanted to make a point of expressing my opinion that the honorable FTC Chairwoman Deborah Platt Majoras, seen here helping Jones Day celebrate their 20th year anniversary, doesn’t understand the power of Google and the possible danger posed by their acquisition of Double Click. OK, with that out of the way everyone should know that Izea will be dumping Google’s Page Rank - yeah boy - and that Social Spark is on track. Maybe not tomorrow, but it did like we’ll see it this calendar year.

*this is an evolving article - updates through the day with announcements from Izea

2008 Traffic updates for macewan.org

by macewan on January 16, 2008

The quiet period is over so I’ll be returning to my noisy self. Let’s recap tech news for the day starting with me :-) ! My traffic is rebounding from the deIndexing in December 2007. Below are stats from two three differing sources. First analytics then BlogsPageRank.com followed by IzeaRank.com. Note that in clicking through to blogs page rank dot com there is no advertising. This is on purpose. I set the site up as a quick and easy resource for folks trying to check your page rank. Using the Izea Rank API I’m adding in the next few days you have even more digit love to brag about.

Right time to make the leap

by macewan on December 30, 2007

JD recently touched on subject with the appropriately name Finding the guts to pursue your dreams, a better understanding of what I mean by taking the next logical step. Seems to be a popular subject as seen by Rowe taking a swipe at it last month. Some folks like the Economist even miss out on the details completely in their desire to jump on this wave of blog earnings review. Psst, she was fired because of her blog. That’s why they call it being dooced to get fired for writing about work on your blog.

The point is there is no right, proper or correct time to make the jump. There’s a feeling you get knowing that the time has come - a now or never feeling in your gut. That what I felt. The planning started in June of this year due to obligations with the family. Something had to change in order for me to spend time at home. So six months worth of planning went into the decision. Tuesday I leap.

Life is good

by macewan on December 30, 2007

Is working from home working if what you do is really more of a hobby than work? Since 1995 my passion has been websites, Internet technologies and online advertising. Then in 1998 I picked up Linux, Apache, mySQL & PHP; collectively known as L.A.M.P. Ask anyone in my family and they’ll tell you how passionate  I am about LAMP and web tech I am.

“O how I laugh when I think of my vague indefinite riches. No run on my bank can drain it, for my wealth is not possession but enjoyment.” – Henry David Thoreau

For many people, the lure of working from home is too strong to resists. Being able to set up your own hours, your own schedule and your own your speed is an extremely attractive way of living to most people. Putting in the hours isn’t the hard part - converting them into profitable per hour payment can be difficult. Luckly my job at BCDC provided the training in this area.

But the thought of setting up your own web-based business can be a huge hassle if you’re not a geek. There are however the lucky few that have “Blog Coaches” to ease the learning curve. Which route do you take? There are literally thousand of differing ways to make a buck or fifty four hundred. You have to have a web design, a product and then you have to sell it, ship it and handle customers. Yuck, been there done that. A much easier way to work from home and run a web-based business is called affiliate marketing and this boys and girls is where the crazy cash is to be found.

Don’t get me wrong blogging for bucks is profitable on a month to month basis. My $2,800 or John Chow’s $27,000 a month is nothing to sneeze at. *Cough - I also work a full-time job* I’m not giving up my different blogs. I’m adding to the group by setting up a site that works as an affiliate marketing site. There are tons of different web-page building programs out there that walk you through every step of the process. Once you have a functional web site, you need to come up with a list of companies that will pay you to link to them. Many major websites like Amazon have an affiliate program that you can join and then get paid for simply linking to their website. It’s quite freaky logging into the different accounts and seeing $58 here $68 there -  $122 here $100 there. It’s a jaw dropping experience.

But if you really want to cash in, you don’t want a webpage with just a list of links on it. This may earn you a buck or two, but when most web surfers stumble upon these kinds of pages after a Google search, they tend to get frustrated and leave. The best route for you to go is to provide interesting web content that relates to the company you’re linking to. Value their time by providing value!

If you can’t write interesting web content yourself, there are many companies that will do it for you for a very reasonable price. Once you’ve got your content, you can weave your links throughout it. People will find your web page on search engines like Google, Yahoo and Ask.com and when they see the well-written content, they will hang around and read what’s on your site. Mayhaps they’ll kind enough to Stumble the page. They will, in most cases, click on the links provided and you’ll be counting the cash in no time flat.

While there is no guarantee that affiliate marketing will turn into a cash cow, with enough hard work, the odds are in your favor. When you combine a kickbutt site design with quality content and a good mix of interesting links, you are bound to get a good number of hits that will quickly translate into dollars for you. Give it a try, you might be surprised at how well it works!

Can you make money blogging?

by macewan on December 13, 2007

Folks love reading how much money certain Pro Bloggers are making each month. Take John Chow for example his JohnChow.com has been monetized since September of 2006. The following month, October, he reported $352.94 earned. Jump forward a couple months to see November 2006 earning at $2,139.93. Twelve months have passed since that report and John Chow is reporting November 2007 income from his blog at $27,420.83. That is not a misprint. Twenty seven thousand four hundred twenty dollars and eighty three cents.

This boys and girls is one hell of an inspiration to those of us that have decided to monetize our blogs. The first month I made the decision to ‘monetize’ I brought in something in the neighborhood of $650 for July 2007 and two months later I earned $2,800 for the month of September 2007. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I also work full-time during the day so these numbers represent my efforts in the evenings with zero real knowledge of what the hell I was doing.

My goal was to see if it was possible and I showed everyone most importantly to myself that yes it was possible. OK, let’s move forward. On December 1st the announcement was made that the 90 day count down to me going pro had started. However, there are plenty of monthly income reports out there showing that money to be earned by monetizing your blog. My 90 day count down is slightly different from others in that I’m involved in seriously intense professional monetization training. My earnings will not be broadcast. My blathering posting has noticeably slowed during this training period. I will not be able to share everything taught but I can direct you to folks that provide training. So we see it is possible to make money blogging. But blogging is not the only way. On Feb. 16th 2008 I turn four oh. Join me on my journey to “retiring at 40“.

GAME ON!
